Human Resource Management is a growing field with an increasing influence on organizational strategy and practice. In its Occupational Outlook Handbook, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a robust 17% job growth in human resource management between 2006 and 2016. CUA's Master of Arts degree program in Human Resource Management (M.A. in HRM) provides excellent preparation for careers in this growing field. Not only does the program provide a curriculum addressing the primary functional areas of HR, preparing students to assume increasing responsibilities in HR management, but also it offers students a tuition-free course to prepare for SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification, the new competency-based certifications developed by the leading professional association in human resources, the Society for Human Resource Management. As stated in the Occupational Outlook Handbook, college graduates with professional certifications will likely have the best job opportunities, with a master's degree in human resources highly recommended for those seeking general and top management positions. CUA's M.A. in HRM program provides superb preparation for aspiring and current HR managers.

The program is primarily offered as a part-time, evening program that enables working professionals to pursue their academic goals while balancing personal and professional demands. The emphasis of the program is on developing an academic foundation that provides current and aspiring HR professionals with the skills and knowledge both to perform their jobs more effectively and to understand better the organizational context within which they operate.

While the program incorporates theoretical concepts, the focus is squarely on providing a practical, applications-oriented education. Course work incorporates a range of pedagogical styles - including traditional lectures, team work and group projects, field research, experiential activities, and the like - to provide a rich, diverse educational experience.

In keeping with such a program, the program's faculty bring outstanding academic credentials coupled with significant real-world work experience. Students in the program enjoy courses led by senior-level HR executives, seasoned consultants, and other highly-qualified instructors.


The M.A. in HRM program consists of a total of 12 courses, or 36 semester credits. Participants typically take two courses per term, with each course meeting one evening per week, from 6:10 - 8:40 p.m. (or 5:40 - 9:40 p.m. in the shorter summer sessions). Students must earn at least a 'B' (3.0) grade point average - both overall and on final projects completed as part of the capstone course, "Master's Capstone: Research, Synthesis, Applications."

The Master of Arts in Human Resource Management program is helping to meet the demand in the HR community for knowledgeable, well-educated HR professionals. To enhance service to this community, the Metropolitan School offers two concentrations:

  • HR Generalist (relevant to both for-profit and non-profit organizations)
  • Federal HR (for current and aspiring HR professionals within the U.S. Federal Government)
