The Catholic University of America is a faithfully Catholic global research university in Washington, D.C. As our mission states, we are “dedicated to advancing the dialogue between faith and reason” as we seek “to discover and impart the truth through excellence in teaching and research, all in service to the Church, the nation and the world.” Catholic University’s motto — God Is My Light — is a constant reminder of our origin and mission.

We were founded in 1887 as the national, pontifical university of the Catholic Church. On that occasion, Pope Leo XIII urged Catholic University to “give to the Republic her best citizens.” For 134 years, our students have made distinctively Catholic contributions to the rapidly expanding world of knowledge – contributions that advance the common good, and help our country and Church achieve their highest ideals, marrying the wisdom of tradition with the most advanced work in science and technology.

Building on years of robust efforts to solidify Catholic identity grounded in Pope St. John Paul’s Ex Corde Ecclesiae, hire the best faculty and staff, expand our research capacities, transform the campus and the student experience, and set records in philanthropic giving, Catholic University is ready to achieve new heights of excellence as the premiere Catholic university in the nation.
