The Theatre Education (M.A.) prepares students, teachers, and teaching artists to use the creative and instructional skills of the theater in the classroom, in productions at elementary and secondary schools, and in community programs.

The Theatre Education (M.A.) is the newest of five graduate theatre programs offered by the Department of Drama. The degree program is the only one of its kind in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Designed to specifically accommodate the schedules of working teachers, classes are offered evenings, and during summer semesters. OR complete the MATE program in 3 SUMMERS.

The MATE program has 2 different tracks:

Theatre Education Track

Choose this track if you are or want to be:

  • a high school theatre teacher
  • a middle school theatre teacher
  • an elementary school theatre teacher
  • a director of educational theatre productions
  • a director of theatre education at a performing arts institution

Creative Teaching through Drama Track

Choose this track if you are or want to be:

  • a classroom teacher who wants to add arts-integrated drama learning strategies to your teaching repertoire to increase student engagement and comprehension
  • a teaching artist in search of an advanced degree that will increase the skills you bring to your education drama residencies
